More than a pool

The pool is the centerpiece. The backyard is the project.

A good pool layout starts well beyond the waterline. It considers the route from the house, where furniture will sit, how guests move, where shade belongs, what parents can see, and how the space feels when nobody is swimming.

Higher Ground plans those relationships before construction begins. The pool, hardscape, structures, cooking areas, lighting, drainage, grade changes, and landscape zones are considered together so the finished property feels deliberate—not assembled one contractor at a time.

Designed as one environment

Every part of the backyard working from the same plan.

Each project is shaped around the home, property, and family. These are possibilities within a coordinated outdoor-living design—not a checklist applied to every pool.

Built for the backyard we're designing

The design comes first. The construction method supports it.

Higher Ground builds both ICF and gunite pools. We begin with the property and the complete outdoor-living plan, then select the method that best supports the design, site, engineering, and project requirements.

Gunite Pools

Higher Ground also designs and builds custom gunite pools. Gunite may be the appropriate choice for a particular geometry, site condition, engineering requirement, or overall project plan. We do not force every backyard into one system.

Designed around how the backyard works

Good design accounts for the hours spent out of the water.

Swimming matters. So do dinner, shade, conversation, supervision, quiet mornings, and the view from inside the home.

MovementClear routes from the home to the pool, dining, shade, lawn, and other destinations.
GatheringSeating and furniture zones sized and placed for the way family and guests actually use them.
ComfortShade, privacy, wind, sun exposure, and sightlines considered early in the design.
Everyday useA backyard that remains useful and inviting even when nobody is swimming.
SupervisionPractical lines of sight from the home and primary seating areas where appropriate.
After darkPool, path, architectural, and landscape lighting planned as one nighttime experience.

Complete backyard transformation

A pool should change how the entire property is used.

The strongest projects connect the pool to the home, solve the grade, create comfortable places to gather, and make each part of the backyard feel intentional.

One project. One vision.

Higher Ground manages the complete project relationship.

You should not have to reconcile disconnected plans from a pool company, hardscape contractor, deck builder, structure contractor, kitchen installer, and lighting team. Higher Ground coordinates the design, planning, sequencing, communication, and construction around one outcome.

01

Clear responsibility

Higher Ground contracts with the homeowner and remains accountable for the overall project.

02

Coordinated design

Pool placement, structures, surfaces, utilities, views, and circulation are resolved together.

03

Construction planning

Permitting, site work, specialty trades, inspections, and project phases are planned in a practical sequence.

04

Direct communication

You have one team to discuss decisions, progress, next steps, and the finished result.

The Higher Ground process

A complete backyard begins with the right questions.

01

Conversation

We discuss the property, priorities, lifestyle, design direction, and overall project.

02

Site Evaluation

We study access, grade, drainage, utilities, architecture, views, and site constraints.

03

Concept & Design

The pool and surrounding outdoor spaces are developed as one environment.

04

Selections

Materials, features, finishes, and project details are refined into a clear scope.

05

Preconstruction

Permitting, engineering, scheduling, site logistics, and construction planning are coordinated.

06

Construction

Higher Ground manages the work, communication, sequencing, and required inspections.

07

Completion

We finish the details, review the completed project, and turn the backyard over for use.

Pool features & possibilities

Details selected for the design—not added from a catalog.

The right features depend on how the pool will be used, the architecture, the site, and the character of the surrounding outdoor spaces.

For some properties, the right water feature may be an integrated pool-and-spa combination, a standalone custom spa, or a plunge pool. Plunge pools can introduce water into a smaller or constrained backyard while preserving room for patios, cooking, entertaining, landscaping, and everyday circulation.

Frequently asked questions

Planning a custom pool around Lake Norman.

These answers are a starting point. Site conditions, design choices, engineering, and permitting all shape the final project.

Does Higher Ground build the pool or only the area around it?

Higher Ground is the homeowner's design/build contractor for the pool and the complete outdoor environment. We contract with you, manage the project, coordinate construction, and remain responsible for the overall result.

What is an ICF pool?

An ICF pool uses Insulated Concrete Forms to shape the pool walls. Reinforced concrete is placed within the forms, which remain in place as an insulated layer around the pool structure. Higher Ground features ICF for many custom pool projects while evaluating the right method for each backyard.

Does Higher Ground build gunite pools?

Yes. We design and build custom gunite pools when the design, geometry, site conditions, engineering, or other project requirements make gunite the appropriate construction approach.

Does Higher Ground build plunge pools and custom spas?

Yes. Higher Ground designs integrated pool-and-spa combinations, standalone custom spas, and custom plunge pools. A plunge pool can suit a compact courtyard, constrained property, or homeowner who values relaxation and wants to preserve more of the backyard for other outdoor-living spaces.

Can the pool project include a patio, outdoor kitchen, or covered space?

Yes. Depending on the project, Higher Ground can coordinate the pool with hardscapes, decks, covered outdoor living, motorized pergolas, outdoor kitchens, fire features, lighting, turf, privacy elements, and landscape areas.

How do you decide where the pool should go?

Placement is shaped by the home's architecture, access, grade, drainage, utilities, setbacks, views, sun exposure, furniture needs, supervision, circulation, and how the rest of the backyard will function.

How long does a custom pool and backyard project take?

Timing varies with design complexity, engineering, permitting, selections, site conditions, weather, and the number of outdoor-living components involved. Higher Ground develops the project schedule after the scope and site requirements are understood.

What areas do you serve?

Higher Ground serves custom pool and outdoor-living clients throughout Cornelius, Davidson, Huntersville, Mooresville, Lake Norman waterfront communities, and surrounding higher-value areas.
